Not all back pain is chronic back pain. Most back pain will start suddenly and will heal within around 6 weeks, this is referred to as acute back pain. Chronic pain is pain that does not ease and lasts for longer than 3 months.

Back pain can be caused by a few things including;

Muscle strain: This commonly happens as the result of lifting up heavy objects or if you move in a strange way that causes a strain on the muscles in your back. People who are not particularly physically healthy are at an increased risk for this.

Arthritis: If you suffer from arthritis it can be the cause of your back pain. Osteoarthritis affects the lower back and can cause a lot of pain in your back.

Bulging disks: Disks are found between your vertebrae or bones, their primary function is to act as a cushion. It is possible for these disks to rupture or bulge and when this happens they can press on a nerve and result in back pain.

Osteoporosis: This is a condition that affects the bones resulting in them becoming porous and brittle. When this happens in your spine it can result in pain.

While back pain can occur to anyone, there are a few factors that could increase your risk of back pain including:

  • Lack of exercise
  • Excess weight
  • Improper lifting
  • Smoking

If your back pain is getting progressively worse or you have one of the following symptoms, then you want to book an appointment with a back pain doctor and get some sound medical advice.

  • Severe pain that does not improve, even when you lie down or rest.
  • The back pain spreads down your leg, particularly below your knee.
  • You experience numbness or tingling in your legs.

Our pain center in West Orange, NJ has a team of doctors that you can make an appointment with. These doctors can assess your pain and help find a minimally invasive way to treat it.

What can you do to prevent and treat back pain

Like with most things, prevention is always better than cure. When it comes to back pain, focusing on prevention is definitely better than the cure. It is possible to avoid back pain by focusing on the following things:

Controlling your weight. When you are overweight more strain is placed on your back and this can often lead to back pain. By ensuring you maintain a healthy weight you are less likely to place this strain onto your back.

Regular Exercise. The advantages of exercise are well known and they do extend to the health of your back. Low impact activities, like swimming or walking, can improve the strength of your back and should be done regularly. It is also important to focus on strengthening your core by doing daily abdominal muscle exercises.

Be smart. If your job requires you to sit for extended periods, make sure your chair is the right height and offers you the right amount of support. When you stand, stand correctly because bad posture will result in back pain. Lift heavy objects only if absolutely necessary and when you lift them, bend your knees so that you don’t place added strain onto your back.
